I agree that reading is very important. It opens new horizons for one. But, inspite of having easy access to the liberaries and books, young people do not read as much as they should. I wonder why that is? Is our educational system somewhat responsible? I think so.
I came to the United States when I was a junior in High School. I came straight to Texas. In January, my counselor called me to tell me about the TAKS test. She put me in the TAKS support class so that I get familiar with the test and also, for me to be prepared for it. When we were practicing reading, I noticed that I was only given instructions to answer the questions right. And, where to look for the answers in the section. I have not attended elementary and middle school here but I am guessing same is the case there too. Instead of letting kids figure out the meaning themselves, they were forced to look for the meaning that the test maker thought to be right.
Instead of letting kids know the importance of reading, they are told the need to pass the test. Our foundation is built weak that's why the building, that is constructed over that foundation, is weak as well.
I think this approach towards education is wrong and needs to be changed.

I agree to the statement that reading is as important as learning. Learning much involves a reading much. Learning is a process that runs from cradle to grave. It`s said that `` the day you stop learning is the day you start dying``.Suffice it to say that the day you stop reading is the you stop learning.
I have come to discover that American system of education encourages more of intelligence than creativity. It encourages intelligence in the sense that her students are given areas of concentration in their exams. They are encouraged to only read and pass with high grades in A`s. So, what do you expect? if not to read only the areas that is mapped out for them.
I believe America needs a change of system.
